Google Chrome Extensions your kids can't live without

Updated: Nov 20, 2020

You can add extensions to Google Chrome to make your child’s experience better. Teachers and those with devices distributed by the board may not be able to install these extensions.

New Nov 17: Google is rolling out "hand up" the week of Nov 17. It will be available for OCDSB classes shortly. No installation needed.

Push to Talk

Use your space bar (or any key) to mute/unmute--no more fishing around for the mouse. This is a very lightweight Google Chrome extension that should not affect your teachers.

  1. Open Chrome on any computer and log in with your/your child’s @ocdsb.ca credentials.

  2. Copy this link and paste it into their Chrome window: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-meet-push-to-talk/pgpidfocdapogajplhjofamgeboonmmj?hl=en-US

  3. Click Add to Chrome.

A pop-up displays. You may need to allow pop ups to continue.

4. Click Add Extension.

5. Click the icon for managing extensions and pin the extension.

Result: When in a Google Meet, the monkey icon on the top is active and you can push the spacebar to mute and unmute. You can also configure a different key.

Easy Accents

Because this doesn’t sit in Google Meet, it doesn’t affect teachers.

(Chromebook accents:

If you want an easy way to be able to type accents from another language, like French, this Chrome extension works in all Google Docs:

Sadly, it doesn’t work in Slides.

See: Accents for other or additional options, such as switching your keyboard to French.

Spell and Grammar Check (for those with IEPs)

Because this doesn’t sit in Google Meet, it doesn’t affect teachers.

Google Docs can have better language and spelling checking using Chrome Extensions:

1. Signed into Chrome and Google Drive as your child's account, open one of the links above.

2. Select Add to Chrome.

3. In Chrome, go to Manage Extensions (puzzle icon) and pin the extension you installed.

Google Slides needs an add-on to run an enhanced grammar and spell check.

  • Add-on to Google Slides called Sapling.

  1. Signed into Chrome and Google Drive as your child's account, open any Google Slide file.

  2. From Add-ons, select Manage add-ons.

  3. Search for Sapling Grammar Checker and Writing Assistant.

  4. Install it.

  5. From Google Slides, select Add-ons > Sapling.

It runs as a sidebar. You do not need to log in to use it.
